Designing for Thumb-Friendly Mobile Navigation

Published on Oct 21, 2025 0 views

Most people hold and interact with their phone one-handed, using their thumb — a reality that should shape mobile navigation design.

The Thumb Zone

The bottom-center of the screen is easiest to reach one-handed; the top corners require the most stretching or a grip change.

Practical Implications

Placing primary navigation or key actions within easy thumb reach (often the bottom of the screen) rather than only at the very top improves real usability for one-handed use.

Button Sizing

Touch targets need to be large enough for an imprecise thumb tap, not just a precise mouse cursor — a common source of mobile usability frustration is buttons sized for desktop.
