Picking a server size can feel like guesswork, but a few rules of thumb make it much more concrete.
Start With Your Application, Not the Spec Sheet
A static website needs far less than a Node.js application server or a database handling thousands of daily transactions. Identify what you're actually running before comparing plans.
RAM Rules of Thumb
A basic WordPress site runs comfortably on 2 GB of RAM. A busier site with WooCommerce or heavy caching benefits from 4-8 GB. Applications running multiple services (web server, database, cache, search) typically need 8 GB or more.
CPU Cores Matter for Concurrency
More CPU cores help when your server handles many simultaneous requests — think a busy e-commerce checkout period, not just raw page complexity. A single high-traffic day is a better sizing benchmark than an average one.
Leave Headroom
Sizing exactly to your current average load leaves no buffer for traffic spikes. A reasonable rule is to size for your peak traffic, not your average day.
You Can Always Resize
