How to Plan a Website Migration Timeline

Published on Oct 31, 2025 0 views

Rushed migrations are where most avoidable problems happen — a realistic timeline with buffer built in produces a much smoother result.

Phase 1: Preparation

Setting up new hosting, testing compatibility, and documenting the current setup should happen well before any actual content moves.

Phase 2: Migration and Testing

Move content to the new environment and test thoroughly on a temporary URL before any DNS changes are made — this is not the phase to rush.

Phase 3: Cutover

Once testing confirms everything works, switch DNS and monitor closely during the propagation window.

Phase 4: Post-Migration Cleanup

Confirm redirects work, monitor for issues over the following weeks, and only decommission the old hosting once you're fully confident the migration succeeded.
