Linux: The Default for Most Websites
Linux powers the vast majority of web hosting worldwide. It's free, stable, and runs the entire common web stack — PHP, MySQL, WordPress, and most open-source applications — without licensing costs passed on to you.
Windows: Required for Specific Technologies
You need a Windows server specifically if your application relies on .NET/ASP.NET, MSSQL databases, or other Microsoft-specific technologies that don't run natively on Linux.
Cost Considerations
Windows Server requires a paid license, which is usually reflected in higher hosting costs compared to an equivalent Linux plan. Unless your application specifically requires it, this is a real cost to weigh.
How to Decide
If you're running WordPress, most PHP applications, or general web hosting, choose Linux. If your developer specifically built your application on .NET or requires MSSQL, Windows is not optional — check with your development team before choosing.
