Ingress and egress describe the direction of network traffic relative to a specific system or network boundary.
Ingress: Coming In
Ingress traffic flows into a server or network — a visitor's request arriving at your web server, or a file being uploaded.
Egress: Going Out
Egress traffic flows outward — your server sending a webpage back to a visitor, which for most websites represents the vast majority of total bandwidth used.
Why the Distinction Matters Commercially
Some cloud and hosting providers price ingress and egress differently, often making outbound (egress) bandwidth the more significant cost factor — worth understanding when comparing hosting plans or cloud services.
