A NIC is the physical hardware component that connects a server to the network, translating data between the server's internal systems and the network cable.
NIC Speed
Common speeds include 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, and higher for enterprise environments — the NIC's speed sets a hard ceiling on how much data a server can send or receive at once.
When It Actually Matters
For most websites, a standard NIC speed is far more than sufficient. It becomes a genuine consideration for servers handling very high traffic volumes or large-scale data transfer, like video streaming platforms.
Redundant NICs
Enterprise servers sometimes include multiple NICs for redundancy, so a single hardware failure doesn't disconnect the server entirely from the network.
