Switches and routers both direct network traffic, but at fundamentally different scopes.
A Switch: Within One Network
A switch connects devices within the same local network, directing traffic efficiently between them based on physical hardware addresses.
A Router: Between Networks
A router connects separate networks together — most commonly, your local network to the wider internet — making decisions about how to route traffic between them.
Why the Distinction Matters
In a data center, understanding which device handles which job helps diagnose whether a network issue is local (switch-level) or involves routing to the outside world (router-level).
