Eye-tracking studies show visitors don't read web pages word-for-word — they scan in fairly predictable patterns.
The F-Pattern
Common on text-heavy pages: visitors read across the top fully, then scan down the left side, reading less of each subsequent line — meaning content buried lower on the right gets far less attention.
The Z-Pattern
Common on simpler, more visual pages: the eye moves from top-left to top-right, diagonally down to bottom-left, then across to bottom-right — a useful guide for placing a logo, navigation, and a primary call to action.
Designing With This in Mind
Placing your most important content and calls to action along these natural scan paths meaningfully increases the odds they're actually seen.
